Dusk Fireworks display George
R. Kennedy Park
It’s not too early to start
making your plans for the 4th of July. The annual event, a
tradition in the community for over 50 years, nearly did not happen this
year. Thanks to the generous support of the local business community and
residents enough money was raised to “save the fireworks”.
The day will begin with a 5K
walk/run, co-sponsored by the Southeast Volusia YMCA, along South Riverside
Drive. At 9:00 AM there will be a dedication ceremony at the recently
upgraded George R. Kennedy Park. The park is named after Edgewater Fire
Chief George Kennedy who perished on the 4th of July in 1986
while launching the annual fireworks display. There will be live
entertainment, food, kids games and local vendors at Menard-May Park and
George R. Kennedy Park beginning at 4:00 PM. The day will culminate with a
spectacular fireworks show by Zambelli Fireworks that is guaranteed to be a
crowd pleaser.
Mark Friday, July 4th
on your calendar and come spend it with your family, friends and neighbors
in Edgewater!!

Police still mum about man found tied
to bed
By MARK I. JOHNSON Staff Report NJ
EDGEWATER -- Police today searched the home of a local contractor, where a
man was found tied up and bound to his bed early Sunday and was later
hospitalized.
Police would not confirm the man's identity but the home at 2232 Victory Palm
Drive belongs to Keith Cope and a man by that same name is listed in serious
condition today at Halifax Health Medical Center. A neighbor today said that
Cope was the one removed from the house about 6 a.m. Sunday and taken away by
ambulance.
Police aren't talking about Cope or his roommate, a registered sexual
offender named Joseph Jordan, 39, whose whereabouts are unknown. ....
A Rockledge man was unnerved Saturday morning when he was asked to show his
gun to the Edgewater pharmacy technician police say he was trying to rob.
Carman
Jeremy Wayne Carman, 27, left the CVS at 1806 Ridgewood Ave., without any
drugs, about 10:40 a.m., Edgewater Officer Andrew Gaden said.
"He passed a note implying he had a gun to the pharmacy tech, but she's been
robbed before and asked to see the gun," Gaden said. "He just left."
Carman apparently wasn't too discouraged by his failed attempt because he
drove almost immediately to the Publix at 1930 State Road 44 and tried to rob
the pharmacy there, officials said. .....
Injuries: Four – minor injuries – 2 adults, 2
children
Transported to: Bert Fish Medical Center
Situation Encountered:
Edgewater Fire-Rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene of a motor
vehicle accident in the northbound lane of the 100 block of North Ridgewood
Avenue. Upon arrival, crews found a single vehicle that had rear-ended a
Votran bus which was stopped to pickup/discharge passengers. Both
northbound lanes of US 1 were blocked while patients were assessed for
injuries and leaking fluids from the vehicles were controlled. A total of
four patients were transported to Bert Fish Medical Center with minor
injuries – two adult females and two children. The cause of the accident is
under investigation by Edgewater Police Department.
Situation Encountered:
Edgewater Fire-Rescue personnel
were dispatched this afternoon to the scene of a car that had crashed
through a garage wall of the home at 3026 Pine Tree Drive. The driver of
the vehicle had apparently hit the accelerator rather than the brake which
caused the car to push through the garage wall into the kitchen of the home.
The patient was extricated and treated by Edgewater paramedics as the car
remained wedged in between the wall of the garage and the kitchen. The
patient was transported by ambulance to Bert Fish Medical Center with minor
injuries.

Number of Personnel: 15
Situation Encountered:
Edgewater fire personnel were dispatched at approximately 7:30 PM last
night to a possible brush fire on the west side of I-95. A column of smoke
was spotted by an airplane that reported it to the control tower at the New
Smyrna Beach Airport. Fire crews were unable to locate the fire from the
vantage points of I-95 and Indian River Boulevard. Air-One from the Volusia
County Sheriff’s Department was able to pinpoint the location of the fire on
the Restorations development property – several miles into a swampy, wooded
area north of SR 442 and west of I-95. New Smyrna Beach fire crews assisted
Edgewater fire personnel. Florida Division of Forestry arrived on scene and
cut a fire line around the approximate six-acre fire. The cause was
determined to be due to a lightning strike. Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach and
Division of Forestry crews remained on scene until approximately 12:30 AM
and returned to the scene this morning to continue mop up operations. It is
anticipated that crews will remain on scene for the remainder of the Friday
and continue to monitor the area throughout the weekend.

Area firefighters put their classroom training in
fighting wildland fires to the test at a real brush fire this afternoon in
Edgewater. After finishing up a morning of controlling and extinguishing a
control burn as part of the Division of Forestry S-190/S-130 training in
Edgewater, crews responded to a reported brush fire in the area of Indian
River Elementary School. Edgewater Fire-Rescue crews were the first to
arrive and found an approximate 1.5 acre fire directly southwest of the
Indian River Elementary School property. The fire was quickly spreading to
the west and into a heavily wooded vacant lot across the FEC railroad tracks
and onto the east side of India Palm Drive. Crews were able to contain and
extinguish the fire before it spread across the west side of India Palm
Drive. The fire never endangered Indian River Elementary School and its
students as wind conditions were driving it away from the school. Railroad
officials were on site and assisted in ensuring that no train traffic would
go through the area until the fire was extinguished. Firefighters from
multiple agencies remain on scene to mop up hot spots. Division of Forestry
personnel plan to burn out any remaining vegetation within the fire lines.
It was reported that several young males on bicycles were seen on the vacant
lot on the east side of India Palm just moments before the fire started. The
cause of the fire remains under investigation.

PRESS
RELEASE
Date: March 11, 2009
Edgewater Fire-Rescue was
recently awarded nearly $60,000 in Federal grant money through the
Assistance to Firefighters Grant that is managed through the Federal
Emergency Management Agency. The money will be used provide state of the
art cardiac monitors for the department’s three front line units – Engine
55, Engine 57 and Rescue 57. The current cardiac monitors from those units
will be moved to back up equipment and allow the department to broaden its
spectrum of how emergency medical services are provided to area residents.
Lieutenant/Paramedic Dan Ruth prepared and submitted the grant while on duty
between responding to emergency calls and attending required training
sessions. Acting Fire Chief, Captain Steve Cousins, advises, “all members
of our department are assigned a ‘special project’ and while this is not
Dan’s assignment, he has willingly taken on this role for our department and
been extremely successful. He has obtained nearly $2 million dollars in
funding to support our fire and emergency medical services operations.” The
department anticipates purchasing the units in the upcoming months and
putting them into service as soon as they arrive.
