New Smyrna Beach
Police investigators are looking into the theft of tens of thousands of
dollars worth of jewelry from a New Smyrna Beach home over the weekend.
According to the police report, Debra Loucinda Johnson, 50, reported the
crime Saturday, but may have discovered it a couple of days earlier. The
victim told officers she returned to her Riverside Drive home to find
someone had broken into her house.
While the incident report did not provide details of how the burglar got
into the residence, it was last known to be secure on Sept. 14.
Johnson told police investigators she knows the male suspect.
Johnson told officers she would provide investigators an itemized list of
the stolen items and their value.

report of road rage
with shots fired from one vehicle at another.
Nova and Isabelle.
A POPD unit in the area also heard the shots.
The report was that the alleged victim was following the
assailants. I went out in my van to get possible news
on video.
In New Smyrna Beach, NSPD units stopped two vehicles.
I thought the stops were in two different locations,
but I am not sure where the stops were.
I found police cars on U.S. 1, I guess at Faulkner.
I walked up to the scene, getting my camera ready to shoot
video of police talking to a female, when a big guy, civilian,
walked over to me, and asked me what I was doing. I asked him
what was going on, and he said, nothing,
the police are here, ask them.
I replied to him that they were busy right now.
The big guy walked away
from me, and I proceeded to take video of the silver car,
which I had heard on the police monitor was one of the cars
possibly involved in this incident. You can hear what happens
then. The big guy came back to me and got in my face, telling
me not to take pictures of his car. Perhaps he was one of the
three in a car, who were originally stopped,
(a felony stop I would guess)
and this big guy might have been one of the three guys taken out

Drawbridge, undergoing
upgrade, brings nostalgia
By MARK I. JOHNSON
Staff Writer
NEW
SMYRNA BEACH -- Under the amber glow of streetlights a crane gently
swings the cylinder around the upraised bascule before lowering it
into the bowels of the bridge.
Once in position, crews cajole the 12-foot-long, 8,700-pound,
hydraulic piston into its final resting place before sliding home the
metal pins that meld it with the 104-foot draw leaf.
Over four days and nights last week, as they will again Monday
night, Florida Department of Transportation contractors climbed and
crawled on and in New Smyrna Beach's North Causeway bridge as part of
a $690,000 rehabilitation and upgrade of the million-pound span's
lift mechanism.
In a world of expediency, the drawbridge is considered a relic of
the past by some. However, despite the cost in time waiting in
traffic for an open bridge to close, along with the expense of
maintaining these mechanical tributes to man's determination to
overcome, they hold a special place in the human psyche. ....
