NRA targets mayors group
By RAY WEISS Staff
writer , Daytona Beach News-Journal
The National Rifle Association is taking aim at some mayors nationwide,
including Ormond Beach's Fred Costello.
Costello
He and 450 other members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns are being
pressured to quit the organization that has a stated mission of "preventing
criminals from illegally obtaining guns and preventing those who do from
using them."
Costello said he has received many e-mails lately labeling him a
gun-control advocate. He is the organization's sole mayor in Volusia and
Flagler counties, and one of 40 in Florida.
"The National Rife Association is basically trying to make mayors look
like they are against all guns," Costello said. "And that's absolutely not
true."...
The investigation is
continuing to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the home
invasion incident from Sunday morning. The resident/victim Dayne Rollins
was acquainted with the Brandy Harris and picked her up from the 7-11
store on Sunday morning. Harris called Rollins a few minutes earlier
wanting to smoke marijuana with him at his residence. Rollins arrived at
the residence with Harris and they were only inside for a minute or two
when suspects Bell and Young abruptly entered the home through the open
front door. Rollins has a roommate staying with him who was identified
as Jason Rockwell 30 yoa who was also in the home when the robbery took
place. Rockwell was held at gunpoint by Young while Bell confronted
Rollins. Rollins was ordered to “give me everything you’ve got” by Bell
who was holding a small caliber pistol. Young armed himself with a rifle
that was in Rollins’ home and held it on Rockwell. At one point Brandy
Harris assisted in the robbery by handing ammunition for the rifle to
Young. Rollins gave Bell several hundred dollars in cash and some
prescription pills at which time Bell, Harris, and Young left Rollins’
side of the duplex home and went to the other side where Rollins mother
lives. At this point Rollins armed himself with the shotgun and
confronted the suspects at the front door of his mother’s residence. The
suspect’s pointed guns back at Rollins and shots were fired. All three
suspects ran to a black Nissan parked at the street. Rollins fired at
least 4 shots at the car striking all three suspects. Bell and Harris ran
from the vehicle while Young drove off. Bell was captured by Ormond
Beach Police Officer Jay Brennan while trying to hide in some bushes in
nearby Milton Pepper Park. Harris briefly sought refuge at a nearby home
and then ran to Florida Hospital Oceanside where she sought treatment for
a grazing bullet wound to the head. Harris fled from the hospital when
she learned that police were being called. Young was captured during a
traffic stop in Daytona Beach. Ormond Beach detectives tracked Harris
down late Sunday and took her into custody after she agreed to meet at a
location in Daytona Beach. Neither Rockwell nor Rollin’s mother were
injured in the incident. Rockwell is not considered a suspect and police
believe he had no knowledge of the group’s intentions. Detectives do
believe that the crime was planned in advance by Bell, Young, and Harris
and that Rollins was targeted due to Harris’ knowledge of his keeping
cash and medications at his residence.
Detectives have no plans
to charge Rollins criminally for his use of the shotgun to fend off the
robbers. The shotgun Rollins used however had been modified by sawing off
the barrel and stock rendering it illegal to possess. Rollins will be
charged with one count of possession of a short barreled shotgun, a 2nd
degree felony.
(Correct
victim first name spelling is Dayne, not as listed in original release)
Congrats to ALL the officers and
team members of the Ormond Beach Police Department!
And thanks to all who had a part
in this successful result of a terrible situation, including the
Daytona Beach Police Department for their assistance in catching the
criminal who fled to Daytona Beach.
Based only upon what I have read ... I am of the opinion that because
the victim was armed and chose to use his firepower in response to
the invasion of his home, all our residents are safer and will have
less of a threat from subsequent home invasions.Criminals
who otherwise would consider an armed home invasion will consider the
results of this home invasion turned around onto the criminal and
remember that they don't know who has the
firepower to respond!
Based upon the information provided,
I hope our laws protect the
homeowner who protected his home.

Date & Time:
Sunday September 13th, 2009 @ 9:30am
The Ormond
Beach Police Department is investigating a home invasion and shooting
incident that occurred this morning at the above listed location. Dane
Rollins, 34, of #4 Cypress Circle reported that two armed male suspects
barged into his residence while he was sleeping and demanded money.
Rollins complied but armed himself with a shotgun as the suspects fled
the residence. Shots were exchanged in the street between Rollins and
both suspects. One suspect ran from the area on foot and the other fled
in a dark colored Nissan. The Nissan was stopped by Daytona Beach Police
in the 800 block of N. Atlantic Ave. and the driver was taken into
custody and transported to Halifax Hospital with gunshot wounds. The
other suspect was found by an Ormond Beach patrol officer a short
distance from the residence, taken into custody, and then transported to
Halifax Hospital also suffering from gunshot wounds. An unidentified
female was also involved in the incident somehow and may have been
injured as well. The female fled the area during the shooting and sought
refuge briefly at a nearby home before running from the area on foot. She
has not been located. Rollins was not injured in the incident and is
being interviewed by detectives at this time. The suspects have not been

Car Burglary Alert
Received from the
Ormond Beach Police Dept.
Aug. 28, 2009
The Ormond Beach Police
Department is investigating three recent cases of vehicles being broken into
while parked at the YMCA located at 500 Sterhaus Dr. in the city. In each of
the cases, the victims returned to their cars and discovered a window broken
out and their purses and/or wallets missing from the cars. Investigators
have determined that in one of the cases, the culprit(s) used the victim’s
credit card within 20 minutes of the break-in. In another case, suspects
tried to use a credit card taken in the burglary to make a purchase of over
$500.00 at the Target store in Daytona Beach but were unsuccessful. The
victim had quickly reported the theft to the bank and the cards were
cancelled prior to the suspects attempt to use it.
Ormond
Beach Police obtained surveillance video from the Target store which show
two females and a male together when the transaction was attempted. In
addition, security cameras captured two possible vehicles being used by the
suspects. They were seen entering and leaving the Target parking lot in what
appears to be a silver or light blue 4-door passenger vehicle that had no
hubcaps. The make of the car is unknown. The suspects are also believed to
be driving a late model silver colored pick-up truck. Investigators working
with neighboring agencies have determined that these same suspects may be
responsible for other identical crimes at the Deland and Port Orange YMCA’s.
Residents are urged to
protect themselves against this type of crime by ensuring that their
vehicles are always locked. Items of value should be removed from the
vehicles if at all possible or at the very least, hidden from view.
Suspicious persons/activity should be immediately reported to police.

SCAM ALERT
From Ormond Beach Police Department
July 2, 2009
Ormond Beach Police warn of
possible scam being perpetrated by persons selling magazines subscriptions door
to door. A complaint was filed with OBPD on 7-1-09 by a victim who reported that
he paid $62.00 for a subscription to a car magazine that was sold by a young
male approximately 18-20 years of age who came to his door back on February 19th
of this year. The victim was told to expect the subscription to take 90 to 120
days to process. When that time period came and went, the victim inquired and
learned that his check was deposited and on 2-20-09 and cleared on 2-23-09. The
victim then tried calling the company, “Greater Image Inc” and found the phone
number disconnected. Finally, he called the magazine that he thought he
purchased and discovered that they had no record of him ever buying a
subscription.
A check of the company name
being used by the subscription seller, Greater Image Inc., through the Better
Business Bureau revealed that there have been numerous complaints against the
company nationwide. Complaints were filed by victims for not receiving their
paid subscriptions, having difficulties canceling subscriptions, and failing to
receive promised refunds.
Citizens are urged to beware of
this scam and contact police if they are approached by any door to door
solicitors who do not possess both an occupational license and a city
solicitor’s permit.

Volusia County will be
opening an Essential Services Center on Tuesday May 26th, 2009 in
Holly Hill at the recreation center located at 1406 Daytona Avenue. The

County Emergency Operations Center because it is central to the damaged
areas for both Holly Hill and Ormond Beach. Details on the services that
will be provided at the center have not been finalized at this time.
Essential Services Centers (ESC) are similar to FEMA's Disaster Recovery
Centers. In the absence of a federal disaster declaration, FEMA cannot open
a disaster recovery center. The ESC provides similar assistance but with
state agencies participating. Various state agencies will participate in the
local ESC. A list of the specific agencies that will participate is not

Ormond Beach Police
initiated a missing person’s investigation on Wednesday evening 4-29-09
after Theodore L. Buckels, 55, of 493 S. Halifax Dr. was reported by his
wife to be missing after complaining of symptoms of a heart condition.
Buckels was reported to have left in his vehicle earlier in the day for
medical treatment after feeling faint and experiencing symptoms of high
blood pressure. Buckels never arrived at his doctor’s office or any of the
area hospitals. An alert was issued for Buckels so that a well being check
could be conducted. Police began tracking Buckels via his cell phone and
determined him to be driving in the Ormond Beach area but were unable to
locate him.
At 9:52 pm, a crash was
reported at the intersection of Hand Ave. and US-1. Witnesses reported that
a driver struck a power pole in a small pick-up truck. The driver got out of
his vehicle momentarily, appeared unsteady on his feet, and then fled in his
vehicle southbound on US-1. A Holly Hill patrol officer found the vehicle at
Calle Grande and US-1 and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, later
identified as Theodore Buckels did not stop and police began to pursue him
southbound on US-1 at speeds of approximately 35 to 40 mph. Ormond Beach
units took over the pursuit at Mason Ave. and US-1 when Holly Hill units
terminated their involvement. The pursuit continued into Daytona Beach with
speeds fluctuating between 35 and 45 mph and Buckels weaving from side to
side within both southbound lanes of US-1.
Ormond Beach Officer Shane
Jarrell was ahead of Buckels’ car and the pursuing patrol units, attempting
to clear traffic along US-1. Jarrell observed a motorist pull to the side as
he yielded to Jarrell’s marked patrol car with lights and siren engaged.
Buckels suddenly veered to the right on an apparent collision course with
the car. Jarrell quickly pulled in behind the motorist placing his patrol
vehicle between the citizen and Buckels car. Jarrell’s intent was to protect
the motorist from injury. Buckels’ 2008 Mitsubishi pick-up then rear ended
Jarrell’s patrol car at Trixie St. and US-1. Buckels’s vehicle coasted to a
stop at which time officers attempted to check his condition and remove him
from the vehicle. Buckels refused commands to exit the truck and would not
open his window or doors. Officers forced entry into the truck and took
Buckels into custody. Officer Jarrell was not injured in the crash. Another
Ormond Beach police officer suffered minor cuts when Buckels resisted the
officers and was taken to the ground. Buckels was transported to the
hospital minor injuries. Buckels submitted to a blood test after
investigators detected an odor of consumed alcoholic beverages on his
person. Damage was estimated at $5500.00 to Officer Jarrell’s patrol car.
