Parks in Port Orange,
Florida There are 23 parks listed for Port Orange, with a total of 400 acreage.
------------------------------------------------------------ ....A preservation group working with the city this week bought 17 acres
along the creek from a local landowner for $1.4 million, moving forward plans to
turn the property into a park that will be accessible only by boat. "It's a beautiful place," Port Orange Grants Administrator Kent Donahue said.
"It's rare that something like this comes up." For two years, the Trust for Public Land, a nonprofit conservation group that
often serves as an intermediary between the state and landowners, has negotiated
with landowners Bill and Betty Russell to secure the property that includes a
two-story house on 11 acres of uplands and 6 acres of swamplands. Port Orange and Florida Communities Trust split the cost and will pay back
the Trust for Public Land. City officials hope to receive help with Port
Orange's portion from Volusia Forever, which placed the property on its A list.
Officials plan to put a park there with a boardwalk weaving through the
swamps, volleyball courts and rental of the house for meetings and receptions,
but there will be no access from the road, Donahue said. Residents with canoes or kayaks can paddle there and the public can launch
from Gamble Place, a 175-acre historic site with cabins owned by the son of the
founder of Procter & Gamble, which is across the creek from the Russell
property, Donahue said.... Read the complete News-Journal article: --------------------------------------------------------------------------
