Volusia Co. Offers Seasonal Flu Vaccine Early

Posted: 9:12 am EDT September 1, 2009Updated: 4:09 pm EDT September 1, 2009

Volusia County is getting an early jump on the flu season. They started giving seasonal flu vaccines Tuesday.

The county is encouraging people to get the shots before the vaccines for swine flu arrive. There has been a steady flow of people all morning to get the flu shot and there is not an unlimited supply.

The line for flu shots started to form before the doors even opened at 9:00am at the Port Orange fire station. Betty Nelson was one of the first to be immunized. She wanted to avoid the lines or a rush for the shot to fight off the regular flu virus.

"Flu kills people. I'm an elderly person and you want to try to stay as healthy as you can, for as a long as you can," Nelson said. ...

“Port Orange Fire-Rescue Partners with Area Businesses

to Offer Safe Biohazard Disposal”

PORT ORANGE, FLA Aug. 26, 2009—Port Orange Fire-Rescue, with the assistance of several community partners, recently rolled out the Community Sharps Collection Program.  This program is designed to assist residents in safely disposing of their “sharps” (used needles and syringes).  Some established programs only accept sharps containers for disposal, but Port Orange’s program is unique in that it supplies the residents of Port Orange with an approved container for future use.  Division Chief Russell Rafferty researched sponsorship for this program due to the dangers posed to the community when sharps are disposed of improperly.

Thanks to donations from Halifax Health Port Orange, Port Orange Family Days Community Trust, and Wal-Mart Store #582, Port Orange Fire-Rescue has been able to place a sharps collection site with new sharps containers at each of the five fire stations.  Port Orange City Council recognized these sponsors at the August 25th Council Meeting

A portion of the money will be used to cover the cost associated with safely disposing of biohazardous materials, which was previously the responsibility of the individual using the containers.  As a result, the generosity of the sponsors will contribute to the cleanliness of the environment as well as the safety the residents.

Firefighters get second chance to retire early

  daytona beach news-journal

PORT ORANGE -- While efforts continue to wrap up contract negotiations with firefighters, the City Council appears ready to change one of the biggest stumbling blocks to a deal -- pensions.

Under what has been called a one-time offer by the city, some firefighters who did not file to retire early will get a second chance to make that choice.

City Manager Ken Parker told the City Council a misunderstanding led to the offer. Port Orange was administering its pension plan by allowing firefighters to retire early at any point beyond their 20th year.

However, a new pension administrator said that practice was incorrect. Instead, firefighters must make the decision on early retirement between their 20th and 25th years. . . .
