News Release

UPDATE
On October 6, 2009 at 6:59
pm Arthur Jacob Jansen was placed under arrest in the 300 block of Bent Oak
Drive in Port Orange by Detective Steve Braddock. He was charged with
fraudulently using the personal identification of a deceased person. Arthur
Jacob Jansen was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail under a bond
of $ 1,500.00.
Michael Reese, Michael Reese’s 14 year old son and
Michael Cross resided together at 362 Bent Oak Drive in Port Orange. On
January 13, 2009 Michael Cross died of natural causes while inside the
residence.
On September 21, 2009 at approximately 9:30 am
Michael Reese asked a friend named Arthur Jansen to drive him to the Port
Orange City Hall to pay his water bill. Upon arriving in the parking lot
Michael Reese informed Arthur Jansen he was going to unlawfully attempt to
have his water bill transferred to his deceased roommate’s name, Michael
Cross.
Michael Reese entered the City of Port Orange water
department around 10:20 am and approached a utilities employee. Michael
Reese requested to have his water service account changed into Michael Cross
name as he was the person actually responsible for the bill. There was a
current outstanding unpaid balance of $ 87.74 for the 362 Bent Oak
Drive location.
Michael Reese then produced a Florida drivers
license which had been issued to Michael Cross on January 12, 2005. The
utilities employee explained to Michael Reese that Michael Cross would have
to be present to switch the account. The utilities employee began assisting
other customers. Minutes later Arthur Jansen walked into the water
department and stood next to Michael Reese. The utilities employee made
photocopies of the drivers licenses and handed Michael Reese his and she
handed the Michael Cross drivers license to Arthur Jansen who placed it in
his pants pocket. The water account transfer was then completed.
On October 3, 2009 the utilities employee was
reading the newspaper when she observed a photo of Michael Reese, his
deceased son, and Michael Cross. The new article mentioned that Michael
Cross had died in January of 2009. The utilities employee immediately
realized that Michael Reese knowingly had the water account fraudulently
switched to a deceased person’s name so as to avoid responsibility for the
water bill. This fraudulent act would not have been possible without the
direct involvement of Arthur Jansen posing as Michael Cross.
On October 5, 2009 the aforementioned facts were
reported to the Port Orange Police Department at which time an investigation
was initiated. Based on the totality of the evidence obtained it was
apparent that both Michael Reese and Arthur Jansen acted in concert while
fraudulently utilizing the personal identification of a deceased person.
On October 6, 2009 at 10:00 am Michael Reese, who
was already incarcerated at the Volusia County Branch Jail on an unrelated
charge, was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Division. The bond amount
is $ 1,500.00.
Arthur Jacob Jansen is being sought by the Port
Orange Police Department for his involvement in the above incident, criminal
charges are pending. His current location is unknown.
Anyone with pertinent information is asked to
contact Det. Sgt. David Meyer at
# 506-5882.

On
September 29, 2009 at approximately 10:30 am a unidentified white male
entered into the Colonial Bank located at 900 Village Trail in Port Orange
and handed the bank teller a note which implied that he had a firearm. He
demanded that the bank teller put all of the money in a bag, and he relayed
to the bank teller that he was “desperate”. The bank teller handed an
undisclosed amount of money to the unidentified white male along with a dye
pack. The unidentified white male was last observed driving from the area in
a black in color vehicle.
The
Regional Communications Center then received a 911 call at 10:48 am from a
male who stated that he had just committed a bank robbery and wanted to turn
himself in to authorities. He provided the name of Tony Olea along with a
date of birth as well as his vehicle description and current location which
was the Chevron gas station at S.R. 44 and I-95 in New Smyrna Beach. Tony
Olea was still on the phone when Port Orange Police Detective Eric Fields
and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department arrived on scene. A bank teller
was driven to the location and positively identified Tony Oleo as the bank
robber. Detective Eric Fields placed Tony Oleo under arrest for Robbery and
after processing he was transported to VCBJ under a $ 20,000.00 bond. The
stolen bank money was recovered inside of Tony Oleo’s motor vehicle, which
is a 2006, black, Volkswagen, Jetta.
Anyone
with pertinent information is asked to contact Detective Eric Fields at #
506-5893.
On September 18, 2009 the Port Orange Police Department was contacted by
a resident of the South Willow Avenue area in Port Orange who was
concerned for an 86 year old neighbor. Upon arrival of the police, Harold
McBride Lawn Service was on scene at the 86 year old victim’s residence.
Statements were obtained from the 86 year old victim, Harold McBride, as
well as banking documents which revealed that Harold McBride was in fact
exploiting the 86 year old victim.
Harold McBride solicited the 86 year old victim for his lawn service
approximately three months ago. Harold McBride coordinated a business
arrangement in order to complete very basic lawn care duties; he then
took advantage of the 86 year old victim in an effort to obtain money.
Bank records reflect he was able to obtain approximately $ 24,163.00 from
the 86 year old victim over the last three months. A reasonable and
prudent person would determine that this amount of money is excessive for
the type of work and services completed. This excessive pricing, coupled
with the age and mental capabilities of the 86 year old victim clearly
shows that Harold McBride had been in fact exploiting this business
relationship in an effort to obtain money.
On September 23, 2009 Detective Eric Fields obtained an arrest warrant
against Harold McBride for the charge of Exploitation of the Elderly
over $ 20,000.00. The arrest warrant was signed by Judge William
Parsons and stipulated a bond amount of $10,000.00. Harold McBride was
arrested today at 4:32 pm and transported to VCBJ under the $ 10,000.00
bond.
If
anyone has any information pertaining to this investigation, they are
asked to contact Detective Eric Fields at # 506-5893.

On September 21, 2009 at
approximately 6:00 PM, Port Orange Police Officer Darren Starling was
dispatched to the Target Department store at 1771 Dunlawton Avenue in regards
to a female subject Target loss prevention had in custody for felony retail
theft of $1,335 in Blue Ray DVD’s. The subject was later identified 21 year
old Heather Nicole Pilling (07/26/1988). Target loss prevention advised
Officer Starling that Pilling had been in the Port Orange Target store on
Sunday 09/20/09 as well as earlier in the day on 09/21/09 and stolen
additional Blue Ray DVD’s. Officer Starling placed Pilling under arrest for
felony retail theft as well as resisting a retail merchant as Pilling had
resisted loss prevention efforts when they attempted to escort her to their
loss prevention office on this latest incident.
While Pilling was in
custody at Target, she advised Officer Starling that she was pregnant and was
having a panic attack and required medical assistance. EVAC ambulance was
summoned to the scene and recommended Pilling be transported to the hospital
to be evaluated by a physician. Pilling was transported by EVAC ambulance to
Port Orange Halifax Hospital at approximately 7:05 PM.
At the hospital Officer
Starling secured Pilling with handcuffs to a bench in an ER evaluation room.
Officer Starling went outside the hospital to his patrol car regarding some
paperwork and he was advised shortly thereafter by EVAC staff that Pilling
was seen departing the hospital facility heading east through the parking lot
towards Nova Road. It was later learned that Pilling had maneuvered out of
the handcuffs in the evaluation room and subsequently left the hospital on
foot. Starling radioed this information in and a search of the area for
Pilling turned up negative results.
Port Orange Detectives investigated various locations for Pilling thus far with
negative results and continue to investigate the whereabouts of Pilling to
subsequently transport her to the Volusia County Branch Jail on the above
charges in addition to the escape charge. A photo of Pilling is attached to
this press release.

M. Miller said. He started to run toward his home, but collapsed onto a
sidewalk where a neighbor ran to help him and called 911, Miller said.
Zachory was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach and

PORT
ORANGE, Fla. -- Port
Orange Police have stepped up patrols around Atlantic High School after
two students said a man stopped his vehicle and exposed himself on
different days.
.......A 14-year-old was near the intersection of
Richel Drive and Clyde Morris Drive on Aug. 26
when a man pulled along side her and asked if she
wanted a ride.
He exposed himself while sitting in the
vehicle, police said. Police think the same man
pulled alongside a 15-year-old on Reed Canal and
again exposed himself. They worry he'll grow
bolder.
"Hopefully it's not going to get to a point
where it's, not just exposing themselves, but
then getting, stepping up and trying to pull
someone into a car -- and then even elevating
from there," Capt. Frank Surmaczewicz said.
Police are hoping to catch a break with
surveillance video. In the second incident, there
are a number of professional buildings in the
area, some of which have cameras pointing to the
street.
Police are reviewing the tapes and hoping to
catch a glimpse of the victim, or more
importantly, the car both victims have described
-- a silver vehicle with a spoiler.
Police said it's a 2004 or 2005 two-door Honda
Civic.
The young victims didn't get a good enough
look at the man's face for a composite, but
police are hoping the vehicle information will
generate new leads......

PORT ORANGE
Richard B. Rogers, 43, of Port Orange was arrested Aug. 17 and
charged with possession of marijuana, possession of controlled IV narcotics
and driving under the influence.
At 2 a.m., officers received a call from a woman who had witnessed a red
sports utility vehicle crash into a guard rail, causing extensive damage,
before continuing south on Spruce Creek Road. Damage to the guardrail was
estimated to be $3,500.
A little later, a police officer saw a vehicle fitting the description on
Spruce Creek Road. The officer got behind the vehicle and activated his
emergency lights in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. But the driver did
not stop his vehicle and instead drove through the front yards of several
residencies.
After traveling a short distance, the vehicle eventually came to a stop
in a parking lot in the 4000 block of Nova Road.
The officer approached the vehicle and removed the driver, later
identified as Rogers, from the driver's seat. As the officer talked to
Rogers he noticed a strong odor of alcohol. The officer also noted Roger's
speech was slurred and slow and his eyes were bloodshot and watery.
A search of Rogers prior to arrest revealed an oval colored pill, later
identified as Alprazolam, in his right front pants pocket. Rogers said the
pill belonged to his wife and he did not have a prescription for it. The
officer also found 0.025 grams of marijuana in a cup holder inside the
vehicle.
Rogers was arrested and taken to the Port Orange Police Department for
processing. He was later transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in
lieu of $4,750 bail.
