H1N1 SWINE FLU-RELATED DEATH IN VOLUSIA COUNTY
The Volusia County Health Department has been notified of an H1N1
swine
flu-related death of a 58-year-old male.
While most cases of H1N1 swine flu are mild, there are exceptions.
Pre-existing health conditions often play a role in how individuals
react to the flu. However, this case did not involve known medical
complications.
“We extend our sincere sympathy to the family,” said Dr. Bonnie
Sorensen, director of the Volusia County Health Department. “Our
hearts go out to them during this difficult time.”
Citizens are urged to practice good hand hygiene and proper coughing
etiquette to prevent the spread of germs and to avoid getting sick.
“Since the H1N1 swine flu virus is circulating in our community it
is important for everyone to practice the proper precautions,” said
Health Department Director Dr. Bonnie Sorensen.
During a typical flu season there are 36,000 deaths nationwide and
about 200,000 people hospitalized with seasonal influenza-like
illness.
Flu prevention tips
● Cover nose or mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw
the tissue in the garbage after using it.
● Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or
sneezing. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers also are effective.
● Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs can be spread by this
way.
● Stay home if sick.
● Contact your medical provider if you have a fever and flu-like
symptoms. Symptoms of flu include:
-- Fever more than 100 degrees
-- Cough
-- Sore throat
-- Body aches

Volusia, firefighters' union
still disagree on contract
By HEATHER SCOFIELD Staff
Writer, Daytona Beach News-Journal
. . . .The parties left the negotiation table after several hours,
still at odds over the union contract for the 2007-08 fiscal year after a
public hearing Thursday. However, the council's decisions on each item of
disagreement brought closure -- welcome or otherwise -- to the issues.
The contract items agreed upon during the three-year negotiation
process, along with those decisions made by the council Thursday, will
next go to union members for ratification. Regardless of local
firefighters' decision to ratify the contract or not, its terms will be
imposed, officials said.
The parties reached resolution on a few disputed issues both before
and during the hearing. But the remaining items were left in the hands of
council members.
The council voted in favor of recommendations made by County Manager
Jim Dinneen on nearly all of the contract terms under dispute, including
issues surrounding employee discipline for drug and alcohol use and
providing food to firefighters on long emergency calls.
Not all of the decisions were unanimous and a few of the issues
divided the council, including firefighters' raises.
The union asked for a 2 percent cost of living increase and a 2
percent merit raise. County officials had verbally agreed to the raises
and budgeted money for them when negotiations began in 2007, a year when
most other county employees got raises.
But after three years of negotiation and economic decline, Dinneen
recommended the council skip the merit raise and only offer the cost of
living increase, non-retroactively. . .

More charges added to Volusia's copper thief suspect
The
Volusia County Sheriff's Office filed more burglary and grand theft
charges against a man it said was connected to a second theft of copper
at another
cell phone tower.
David McDonald, 35, of Port Orange was already under arrest for burglary,
grand theft, theft of copper, possession of burglary tools and violation
of probation stemming from a cell phone tower burglary early Sunday....
The
Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has filed additional criminal charges
against the defendant after connecting him to a copper theft at a second
cell tower site. The new copper theft was reported on Monday, one day
after David McDonald’s arrest. The site of the second theft was an AT&T
tower on West Indian River Boulevard near Edgewater -- less than a
half-mile from Sunday’s theft. AT&T officials said the theft at their
site occurred sometime on Sunday.
At
the AT&T site, the suspect broke through a fence and cut approximately 30
feet of copper ground cable and also took a copper ground buss bar. On
Monday, deputies took an AT&T representative to look through the copper
wire seized from McDonald during his arrest and identified copper taken
from his company’s tower site. Deputies filed additional charges against
the defendant for burglary and grand theft.
