graduate of Atlantic High School, is serving as a forward observer in

You can book it that park workers applied weed/feed product around
the lake prior to the kill. The excuses spit out by officials were
routine formulas. Increase in temps? It's Florida. How do manually
aerated waters completely lose their oxygen?
Something fed a severe algae bloom. Run-off is nothing new. The only
thing possible was something dumped in the lake or around it.
Somebody check the applications log books for the park. Bet the
grounds were treated the day before.

Hukill drops challenge to
Kosmas, aims to keep state House seat
By JIM SAUNDERS
Tallahassee Bureau Chief , Daytona Beach News-Journal
TALLAHASSEE -- State Rep. Dorothy Hukill said Friday she has dropped her
bid for a congressional seat and will run again in 2010 for the Florida
House.
Hukill, R-Port Orange, announced this summer she would try to unseat
Democratic U.S. Rep. Suzanne Kosmas in Congressional District 24, which
includes parts of Volusia and three other counties.
But Hukill said she expects to receive a leadership post in the state
House after next year's elections. By staying in the Florida Legislature,
she said she can more directly help Volusia County, as Florida deals with
issues such as budget shortfalls. . . . .

Additional background on dad MICHAEL REESE. There were SIX prior
allegations of abuse and neglect involving his son, who recently died of
a drug overdose. Seems that until recently, there were two (gay) fathers
in the picture. Whether there was ever a mother in the picture is
unclear.
....Police found Jeremiah was giving out pills in the neighborhood,
reports state. His surviving father, Michael Reese, 52, who was home when
Jeremiah died, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of child neglect. The
night of Jeremiah’s death, police found the house in disarray and
numerous prescription bottles. Reese, who has a medical condition,
received 23 prescriptions for pain medication since March.
Reese was released from jail and was at the memorial service, but did
not speak publicly.
Kim Grass, of Port Orange, comforted her 14-year-old son, Blake, at
the memorial when he tried talking to the crowd about his best friend,
but he broke down. The two grew up together in the neighborhood fishing,
skateboarding and riding bikes.
“It just hits too close to home. It could have been any one of our
children,” Grass said.
Gabby Devischeybergen, 12, of Port Orange, hugged Jeremiah on the
school bus two days before he died. She was moving and transferring to a
new school.
“That’s the one thing I’m going to miss about him — his smile and
hugs,” she said. “If kids were doing (drugs), they are not going to try
it anymore.”
Cheryl and Stephen Wilhelm of Port Orange are still in shock after
seeing their son, Max, 14, last weekend in a hospital intensive care unit
after he ingested OxyContin pills with Jeremiah the night he died. The
two have known each other since elementary school. He’s doing better
physically, but dealing with seeing his friend die.
“I almost lost my baby and I’m heartbroken over Jeremiah,” she added.
Stephen Wilhelm said he never thought about warning his son about
prescription pills.
It is so great we are finally getting a dog park. I won't have to go
to Holly Hill anymore..woohoo! The opening date is set for November
14th. See you there!

Most civilians appreciate those serving in the military, but Scott "Boe"
and Tracie Dicken Roberts of Port Orange are actually serving the
military.
The couple work as civilian employees of the Department of Defense
Education Activity -- teaching children of military members and civilian
employees.
The two attended Silver Sands Middle School, Spruce Creek High School
and the University of Central Florida's Daytona campus but didn't know
each other.
Boe Roberts interned at Spruce Creek High School, coached basketball
at Seabreeze High School, and basketball and baseball at Father Lopez
High School while he was attending college. After graduation, he served
seven years in Special Forces units as an Airborne parachute rigger and
jump master in the U.S. Army during the 1990s, logging more than 300
jumps. Later, he taught at Marion County schools.
Tracie interned at Spruce Creek Elementary School and volunteered in
many Volusia County schools .
The two met after Boe's service when they were hired as Port Orange
summer recreation counselors. They married six years ago and in 2004
completed "piles" of DOD paperwork to land jobs....

Experts size up Florida's tsunami risks
Earthquakes and tsunamis most often make headlines in faraway places.
Even though the risk here is remote, federal officials are working to
create a system of ocean monitoring buoys that would warn Florida and the

DAYTONA
BEACH -- Bill Fredrick aims for nothing short of perfection, a fit even
better than a glove.
That's because in every amputee, he sees a war story. His drive for
perfection, in fact, began with a war. His brother lost his right leg to
a land mine in Vietnam 41 years ago. So Fredrick, 54. is intimately
acquainted with how the first moment a patient stands in a new, man-made
leg is a literal first step into a new life.

But Brandon Martin, 16, of New Smyrna Beach, was nowhere in sight.
